Responsibilities
- Partner with Product teams, business stakeholders, and domain experts to translate high-impact questions and business needs into scalable data models, metrics, analyses, and technical solutions.
- Build foundational datasets that are trusted, well understood, aligned with business strategy, and suitable for self-service analytics.
- Design, build, and scale pipelines and data models that integrate and transform data from multiple sources with measurable quality and predictable SLA performance.
- Own the lifecycle of metrics, analytical models, and data products from exploration and prototyping through production, adoption, and maintenance.
- Lead data governance, data management, information lifecycle, metric standardization, and broader data strategy initiatives.
- Expand access to trusted company metrics and promote data engineering best practices across Slack.
- Provide technical leadership, hands-on guidance, and mentorship to engineers across the organization.
- Use AI-assisted development to improve engineering productivity while maintaining code, data quality, and maintainability standards.
Requirements
- 8+ years of overall software engineering or data engineering experience, including 5+ years of hands-on experience with data architecture, data modeling, data management, and metadata management.
- Ability to independently frame and own ambiguous, high-impact problems through strategy, execution, and measurable outcomes.
- Deep expertise in SQL and experience designing scalable, reliable data pipelines and transformations for large and complex datasets.
- Experience architecting and optimizing data models, schemas, and processing workflows for performance, scalability, cost efficiency, and reliability in modern data warehouse environments.
- Ability to influence technical direction and align Engineering, Product, Data Science, Analytics, and business stakeholders without relying solely on formal authority.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language commonly used in data engineering, such as Python or Java.
- Hands-on experience with large-scale data technologies and platforms such as Snowflake, Spark, Airflow, and Hive.
- Experience with relational and NoSQL data stores and data modeling approaches including logging, columnar, star and snowflake schemas, and dimensional modeling.
- Familiarity with data governance frameworks, software development lifecycle practices, and Agile methodologies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaboration with technical and business stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent training, fellowship experience, or relevant professional experience is preferred.
