
Observability Engineer (Splunk)

Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain the health, reliability, and performance of on-premises Splunk Enterprise, including installations, upgrades, monitoring, backups, and recovery.
- Design, operate, and evolve distributed Splunk architectures using Search Head Clusters and Indexer Clusters.
- Manage telemetry ingestion and indexing pipelines, including forwarders, parsing rules, index design, and retention.
- Develop and maintain SPL searches, dashboards, alerts, and data models that provide actionable operational insight.
- Operate storage and retention strategies and contribute to SmartStore planning and implementation.
- Partner with infrastructure and application teams to onboard logs, metrics, traces, and events correctly.
- Define and enforce observability standards for naming, tagging, retention, alert thresholds, and dashboard patterns.
- Reduce alert fatigue and improve the quality and context of operational alerts.
- Execute production changes such as instance resizing or replacement, storage migrations, network/IP cutovers, and maintenance-window activities.
- Create and improve runbooks, automation, post-change verification checklists, documentation, and operational handoffs.
Requirements
- A degree in Computer Science or a related field is required.
- At least 5 years of experience is required.
- Splunk Enterprise Certified Admin certification or equivalent experience is required.
- Experience configuring and operating SmartStore is required.
- Knowledge of AWS fundamentals, including EC2, EBS, VPC, and hybrid connectivity patterns is required.
- Experience with telemetry pipelines from containerized applications and familiarity with OpenTelemetry are required.
- Exposure to OpenShift, Kubernetes, Salt or Ansible, containers, and K3S is required.
- Ability and willingness to teach and improve team practices is required.
- Strong judgment, continuous learning, ownership, automation focus, clear communication, and production safety are valued.
