Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of complex cross-cutting features spanning APIs, data models, and user interfaces.
- Drive technical design for payment capabilities, including architecture trade-offs, operational feasibility, and risk assessment.
- Set technical direction for the platform area and maintain consistency with broader architectural patterns.
- Mentor mid-level engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and pairing.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, reliability gaps, and technical debt.
- Partner with QA on verification strategy and production instrumentation and observability.
- Lead or significantly contribute to production incident response and root-cause analysis, including on-call participation.
- Contribute senior technical judgment to roadmap, estimation, scope, and sequencing discussions.
- Use AI-assisted development tools effectively and help establish responsible team-wide usage norms.
- Stay current with platform updates, security practices, and PCI compliance requirements.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Computer Science or Engineering degree, or equivalent experience.
- Deep Node.js experience building and shipping production backend services at scale.
- Experience building React frontends that consume RESTful APIs.
- Ability to independently scope, design, and deliver full-stack features from data model through user interface.
- Experience designing RESTful APIs and service-oriented or microservice architectures and defending architectural trade-offs.
- Strong knowledge of relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, data modeling, and service boundary design.
- Substantial production experience with AWS or a comparable cloud platform.
- Experience owning CI/CD pipelines, including release and rollback strategies, using Bitbucket Pipelines, GitHub Actions, or similar tools.
- Proficiency with Git and testing frameworks such as Jest.
- Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction beyond individual contributions.
- Fluency with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot, with a clear view of their appropriate use.
- Experience working independently on a 100% remote team while providing technical leadership in an agile group.
- Preferred experience with payment orchestration, tokenization, acquirer integrations, or PCI-compliant environments.
- Preferred familiarity with event-driven architectures such as SQS, EventBridge, and Kafka.
- Preferred exposure to observability tools such as SigNoz, Grafana, and Datadog.
- Preferred infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform.
