Base Salary

Responsibilities
- Lead design and architecture for complex Datastore projects and systems.
- Design and scale PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, GraphQL APIs, integrations, and backend services.
- Own pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots into the warehouse and design event-driven systems covering producers, consumers, replay, and idempotency.
- Debug and profile ambiguous problems across system boundaries while improving structure, test coverage, tooling, and maintainability.
- Draft RFCs, lead technical design and discovery, and align stakeholders on implementation decisions.
- Plan individual and team work while balancing delivery speed, generalizability, technical debt, and stakeholder needs.
- Mentor engineers, provide actionable feedback, and serve as a technical lead or engineering-practice coordination point.
- Improve operational robustness and ease of use through documentation, tools, dashboards, and stakeholder feedback.
- For the PostgreSQL focus, design schemas and constraints, support zero-downtime migrations, operate PostgreSQL in production, and teach database practices to the team.
Requirements
- 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.
- Highly proficient in at least one of data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
- Strong production SQL and PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexes, query plans, query tuning, and complex SQL queries written by hand.
- Hands-on data streaming and event-processing experience with Kafka or an equivalent such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis.
- Proficiency in Julia or Python; Julia experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments, with familiarity with Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Helm.
- Track record of mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience working effectively in asynchronous, remote-friendly, collaborative environments.
- Experience with or interest in LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production, with sound judgment about appropriate guardrails.
- For the Datastore Systems focus, experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript with Node.js and designing complex event-driven systems across APIs, pipelines, and dependent services.
- For the PostgreSQL and Data Modeling focus, deep knowledge of PostgreSQL query planning, index selection, EXPLAIN (ANALYZE), schema design, schema evolution, migrations, replication, backup and restore, connection pooling, bloat, vacuum behavior, and extensions.
