Senior Software Engineer, Analytics & Search
Toast, Inc.Responsibilities
- Build and scale the OLAP Platform that supports real-time reporting, search, and AI-driven products.
- Develop backend services and platform APIs consumed by other engineering teams.
- Ingest business events, index data into OpenSearch, and expose it through federated GraphQL.
- Improve platform performance, cost efficiency, data correctness, freshness, and query latency.
- Contribute to core search engineering such as ranking algorithms, semantic search, and natural-language search.
- Collaborate across team boundaries to understand consumer needs and deliver clean, ergonomic platform solutions.
Requirements
- Strong backend engineering skills in Kotlin, Java, or another object-oriented language.
- Experience working with large datasets where correctness, freshness, and query performance are important.
- Familiarity with document-based or columnar data stores such as BigTable or DynamoDB.
- Strong interest in search engineering, including ranking algorithms, semantic search, or natural-language search.
- Ability to collaborate across teams, understand consuming-team needs, and ship high-quality solutions.
- Ability and willingness to use AI tooling as part of the development workflow.
- Preferred experience designing platform APIs, working with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch at scale, and using data pipelines or event-driven architectures such as Kafka or Pulsar.
- Preferred familiarity with federated GraphQL, ElasticGraph, Apollo Federation, REST API design, or Ruby.
