Responsibilities

  • Learn the Trainline platform’s architecture, dependencies, and failure modes.
  • Participate in production incident response, including investigation, mitigation, communication, and service restoration.
  • Contribute to post-incident reviews and reliability, scalability, and resilience improvements.
  • Participate in the SRE on-call rotation.
  • Design, build, and maintain observability using metrics, logs, events, and traces.
  • Improve monitoring and alerting to reduce noise and improve mean time to detection.
  • Surface operational data clearly during live incidents.
  • Support AWS-hosted infrastructure and shared platform services using infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD tooling.
  • Collaborate with product engineering teams on operational readiness and safe deployments.
  • Advise on reliability and resilience practices.
  • Write and maintain code and scripts supporting reliability and observability goals.

Requirements

  • Experience with SRE concepts including SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets.
  • Hands-on experience with observability tools such as New Relic, Elastic/ELK Stack, Influx, Grafana, or similar.
  • Experience with cloud providers, preferably AWS.
  • Experience troubleshooting Linux operating systems.
  • Scripting experience in at least one language, preferably Python.
  • Understanding of load balancing, reverse proxies, upstream configuration, health checks, and worker and data flow concepts.
  • Understanding of application architecture concepts including threading, queuing, readiness checks, health checks, circuit breakers, timeouts, exponential backoff, and throttling.
  • Experience building, maintaining, and evolving time-series data and related functions such as retention, cardinality, deviation, and moving averages.
  • Experience with build, deployment, and configuration management tools such as GitHub Actions and Terraform.
