Base Salary
$163k - $247k/yr
Responsibilities
- Own the PEO onboarding experience end to end, from discovery and commitment through customer setup.
- Set technical direction by translating ambiguous product bets into designs, sequencing, and durable abstractions.
- Build and ship customer-facing software in a regulated domain where quality and accuracy are critical.
- Partner with teams across Gusto to integrate domains into a coherent customer journey and negotiate unclear ownership boundaries.
- Use AI tools for coding, review, debugging, and codebase exploration, and help build AI-assisted onboarding guidance.
- Instrument the onboarding funnel, define success metrics, and use experiments to guide product changes.
- Raise engineering standards through reviews, testing strategy, observability, and sound tradeoff decisions.
- Level up engineers and influence technical decisions across team boundaries.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including meaningful ownership of customer-facing product surfaces in a large production codebase.
- Strong full-stack experience with mature server-side codebases and modern component-based frontends.
- Experience with Ruby on Rails and React/TypeScript is desirable.
- Demonstrated fluency using AI tooling in day-to-day engineering work and the ability to evaluate where it is effective.
- Ability to take ambiguous business needs, shape them into buildable solutions, and ship with high ownership.
- Strong collaboration and influence across team boundaries, with a record of developing other engineers.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience with growth funnels, conversion, plan or product configuration, or provisioning systems is a bonus.
