Base Salary
$225k - $278k/yr
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction and build the roadmap for Strava’s social platform services.
- Act as tech lead for a small engineering pod and facilitate planning, sprint ceremonies, and cross-team coordination.
- Solve complex technical problems and lead teams in executing solutions across domains.
- Drive modernization and migration efforts for critical platform services.
- Partner with product teams to identify upcoming platform needs and provide capabilities at the right time.
- Own technical investment strategy across the social domain, including reliability, performance, and cost standards.
- Design, build, and review systems supporting Strava’s social features.
- Mentor engineers on the pod and across Strava’s technology organization.
Requirements
- 10+ years of professional backend/server engineering experience with a track record of setting technical direction.
- Experience leading technical projects involving multiple engineers, including scoping, decomposition, coordination, and delivery.
- Experience acting as a tech lead, facilitating team processes, and driving roadmaps.
- Strong system design skills for distributed systems at scale and the ability to make and defend architecture decisions.
- Proficiency in at least one backend language used at Strava: Ruby, Scala, Go, or Java, with comfort learning others.
- Experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud infrastructure such as AWS.
- Production experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including MySQL, Redis, and Cassandra.
- Preferred experience with feed systems, social graphs, recommendation or ranking systems, large-scale system migrations, or server-driven UI patterns.
