Responsibilities
- Lead deep-dive performance investigations across the global JVM-based microservices architecture.
- Reduce infrastructure costs and latency by tuning JVM parameters, garbage collection, and heap and off-heap memory.
- Build diagnostic and observability tooling using eBPF, JFR, and Flamegraphs.
- Optimize Linux kernel scheduling, cgroups, CPU throttling, and JVM workloads in Kubernetes.
- Design scalable infrastructure improvements and resolve concurrency issues, lock contention, race conditions, and memory leaks.
- Mentor engineers on JVM internals and performance practices while collaborating with the Computing Squad.
Requirements
- Demonstrated deep knowledge of JVM internals, including JIT compilation, class loading, and intrinsic methods.
- Extensive experience tuning ZGC, G1, or Shenandoah for large heaps and ultra-low-latency requirements.
- Deep understanding of Linux scheduling, including CFS and EEVDF, and high-concurrency Java workloads.
- Mastery of heap and off-heap memory, Direct Buffers, memory-mapped files, and complex memory-leak diagnosis.
- Experience with Flamegraphs, Java Flight Recorder, eBPF, and large-scale heap-dump analysis.
- Experience with cgroups, CPU throttling, JVM quotas, Kubernetes, and EKS.
- Proven ability to diagnose complex concurrency problems at the instruction level, including lock contention and race conditions.
- Knowledge of AWS infrastructure and its performance characteristics.
- OpenJDK contribution or experience with other low-level runtime environments is a significant advantage.
- Ability to make long-term technical and design decisions, identify root causes, and mentor others.
