Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
- Build and maintain Dockerfiles, container configuration, and Helm charts for services.
- Develop and consume Apache Kafka event streams across multiple topics in an event-driven architecture.
- Write and maintain SQL for MySQL and PostgreSQL databases.
- Work with proprietary frameworks and integrated deployment, tracking, and tracing tooling.
- Collaborate with senior and principal engineers, team leads, project management, release management, and business analysis teams.
- Follow engineering standards, participate in spec-driven development, and apply AI-assisted development responsibly while retaining ownership of critical functionality.
- Participate in occasional client-site workshops, testing, and design sessions as required.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of commercial software development experience.
- At least 4 years of hands-on Java development experience across multiple Java versions.
- At least 3 years of experience building applications with Spring Boot.
- Experience with Maven, JFrog Artifactory, SQL, MySQL and/or PostgreSQL, RESTful API design, Apache Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm charts.
- Working knowledge of TypeScript and related frontend or tooling components.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
- Banking, payments, financial services, regulated-environment, observability, monitoring, distributed tracing, Elastic, proprietary-framework, internal-platform, or responsible AI-assisted development experience is advantageous.
- Oracle Java, AWS, CKAD, Apache Kafka, event-driven architecture, cloud, containerization, or software engineering certifications are advantageous.
- Candidates must be available for agreed office days in Riverlands, Cape Town; Cape Town-based candidates are strongly preferred.
