Staff Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails)

Responsibilities
- Set technical direction for secure, scalable, high-performing Ruby on Rails applications and services across multiple teams.
- Own technical roadmaps, major projects, platform initiatives, architecture decisions, and production systems.
- Design and evolve web applications, APIs, services, data models, and service-oriented or microservices architectures.
- Identify systemic technical pain points and drive architectural improvements, including monolith decomposition where appropriate.
- Partner with Product, QA, Security, DevOps, and engineering leaders to resolve ambiguity, manage dependencies, ensure compliance, and deliver software.
- Guide responsible adoption of AI-assisted coding, debugging, prototyping, and other AI capabilities with appropriate validation, monitoring, and governance.
- Champion code quality through code reviews, automated testing, documentation, and continuous improvement.
- Mentor engineers, establish engineering standards, share knowledge, and lead cross-functional technical initiatives.
- Evaluate and pilot tools and technologies for scalability, reliability, performance, cost efficiency, and developer productivity.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience in a commercial software environment.
- Expert-level Ruby on Rails experience building and scaling production-grade backend or full-stack applications.
- Extensive API and web development experience, including RESTful service design and scalable architecture, API, and data-model design.
- Experience with secure software development in environments using DevOps, infrastructure as code, and automated delivery practices.
- Deep understanding of microservices or service-oriented architectures and distributed-systems trade-offs.
- Practical understanding of AI model capabilities, prompt engineering, and responsible AI use, including monitoring and governance.
- Strong experience with Git, GitHub, collaborative workflows, and branching workflows at scale.
- Strong SQL and data-modeling knowledge, including application performance, persistence-layer design, and capacity planning.
- Experience with AWS-based systems, serverless architectures, and modern cloud deployment and migration patterns.
- Excellent communication, technical influence, cross-functional leadership, mentoring, and ability to explain technical and AI concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
