Responsibilities
- Develop secure, well-tested, performant backend features and improvements using Ruby and GraphQL.
- Build and maintain backend services, application programming interfaces, data models, and business logic for repository management.
- Implement and improve policy, permissions, branch protection, Codeowners, merge strategies, and AI-powered repository configuration capabilities.
- Improve system performance and reliability through SQL tuning, caching, rate limiting, observability, resiliency, and technical debt reduction.
- Monitor production health, participate in Tier 2 on-call, troubleshoot incidents, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve system reliability.
- Collaborate with product management, design, testing, security, user experience research, technical writing, Gitaly, Code Review, and Source Code teams.
- Use AI coding tools and agents for appropriately scoped work and critically review their output.
- Contribute through code reviews, technical documentation, knowledge sharing, and asynchronous collaboration.
Requirements
- Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs, with Ruby and GraphQL experience or the ability to learn them.
- Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices.
- Experience contributing to policy, permissions, or rules-based web application features and making them reliable and maintainable.
- Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, using Git, and participating in collaborative code review.
- Experience using AI coding tools or agents and evaluating their output critically.
- Clear written and spoken English communication skills for remote, asynchronous collaboration.
- Ability to manage priorities, work through ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance on difficult-to-reverse decisions.
