Responsibilities
- Partner with architects and engineering teams to define performance requirements, SLOs, load profiles, and performance budgets during design and development.
- Embed performance checks using k6, Gatling, and Locust into CI/CD pipelines and review production code for scalability and efficiency anti-patterns.
- Build and maintain reusable performance test harnesses, fixtures, synthetic data generators, and automation tooling.
- Design, script, execute, and evaluate load, stress, and full-scale performance tests using k6, Gatling, Locust, JMeter, and LoadRunner.
- Use Linux, shell scripting, and Python to automate test setup, execution, data collection, reporting, and troubleshooting.
- Write and evaluate SQL, analyze table and index design and query execution plans, and diagnose database bottlenecks using Oracle AWR/ASH, SQL Server Query Store/MDW, or PostgreSQL profiling tools.
- Analyze APM, profiling, garbage collection, memory, and production telemetry to identify root causes and drive performance remediation.
- Evaluate and tune JVM memory management and garbage collection behavior under load.
- Document performance requirements, findings, and recommendations and communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of relevant software engineering experience, including at least 6 years in performance engineering, performance/load testing, or a closely related discipline.
- Ability to write and review production application code; this is not a testing-only role.
- Strong Linux command-line proficiency and semi-advanced Bash/Korn shell, Python, or Perl scripting ability.
- Hands-on JMeter and/or LoadRunner experience and experience integrating performance tests into CI/CD pipelines with k6, Gatling, or Locust.
- Experience with Java memory management, garbage collection evaluation, and tuning.
- Strong understanding of SQL, large-scale database fundamentals, table and index design, referential integrity, and query performance evaluation.
- Experience generating and evaluating Oracle AWR/ASH diagnostics or equivalent SQL Server Query Store/MDW or PostgreSQL pg_profile/PoWA diagnostics.
- Ability to collaborate with Product Management, architects, engineering teams, DBAs, and infrastructure teams to define and prioritize performance requirements.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes, Tanzu, or OpenShift for deploying, scaling, and monitoring workloads under test.
- Familiarity with Cassandra or Scylla is a plus.
- Preferred experience extending JMeter/LoadRunner or custom Java-based test frameworks, using Dynatrace, New Relic, Datadog, or Grafana, and applying Python to data analysis and tooling.
- Basic project management and Agile Scrum experience is preferred.
