Responsibilities
- Set the software architecture for SIXT branch operations across more than 2,000 branches in over 110 countries.
- Design integrations between software and physical devices including counter PCs, tablets, POS terminals, scanners, and keyboxes.
- Drive system-design decisions involving event-driven flows, API contracts, state ownership, device-to-cloud protocols, service boundaries, and legacy interfaces.
- Guide architectural change across multiple engineering teams through design documents, technical reviews, and hands-on engagement.
- Spend time in branches working with agents, devices, and customers to shape practical architecture.
Requirements
- Several years of experience building production software systems at meaningful scale for customer-facing, multi-region environments.
- Strong system-design expertise covering API design, data modeling, event and stream patterns, state ownership, and service communication trade-offs.
- Experience shipping software that communicates with physical devices such as POS hardware, retail or restaurant systems, or embedded clients.
- Experience with real-time stateful client-server protocols such as MQTT, WebSockets, or gRPC streaming.
- Comfort working with backend technologies including Go, Java, or Python; Kafka; Postgres or Redis; and AWS or Kubernetes.
- Experience leading architectural change across multiple teams through clear technical communication and follow-through.
- Bonus experience integrating with legacy systems that cannot be rewritten.
