Base Salary
$175k - $280k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design and build backend systems and services, including data models, APIs, and distributed systems.
- Develop durable, scalable, reliable, and correct production software rather than prototypes.
- Build and evolve frameworks and libraries used by other engineers.
- Own services through schema design, implementation, deployment, performance tuning, and on-call operations.
- Select and operate appropriate relational, NoSQL, queue, cache, and search-index data stores.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks involving cost, throughput, and latency.
- Architect systems involving ML models, real-time audio pipelines, agentic orchestration, and stateful conversation systems.
- Identify developer-efficiency improvements and prototype tools or workflow enhancements for infrastructure handoff.
Requirements
- Expert-level programming ability in at least one language and a strong focus on clean, maintainable software design.
- Solid distributed-systems fundamentals, including failure modes, consistency tradeoffs, and scaling strategies.
- Production experience with scalable patterns such as caching layers, sharded data stores, asynchronous processing pipelines, and shared-nothing service architectures.
- Strong database engineering experience involving complex schemas, query tuning, and relational and non-relational data modeling.
- Knowledge of application-level protocols and networking, including REST, WebSockets, gRPC, and HTTP semantics.
- Experience deploying and running services on Kubernetes without being responsible for cluster setup.
- Experience with challenging on-call rotations and a demonstrated reliability-engineering mindset.
- Deep interest and expertise in an area of software such as software design, CRDTs, real-time systems, or database internals.
- Preferred: experience with payments, search and relevance, real-time media, deep Python expertise, or GCP.
