Responsibilities
- Operate PostgreSQL and MySQL on Amazon RDS across production, staging, and development, including replication, failover, backup and recovery, upgrades, autovacuum, wraparound, purge, and replica lag.
- Run ClickHouse for operational and analytical workloads, including table engines, sort keys, partitioning, merges, replication, and ingestion paths.
- Support CockroachDB operations and expand ownership of those systems over time.
- Trace slow queries and lock waits, assess schema-change risk, and review schemas and queries with application teams.
- Build observability using Prometheus, Grafana, Mimir, and Loki; participate in the data-layer on-call rota and lead incident analysis and blameless postmortems.
- Build Python and Go tooling, automate provisioning and recovery with Terraform, and use AI harnesses while validating their output against production facts.
- Implement and audit access controls and encryption, set cross-engine standards, and participate in architecture reviews and code-level investigations.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience operating production relational databases as a DBA, Database Reliability Engineer, or Data Platform Engineer.
- Deep production experience with PostgreSQL and MySQL, or deep experience with one and substantial working experience with the other.
- Strong understanding of database internals, including PostgreSQL heap and row versions, InnoDB clustered indexes and undo logs, write-ahead logging, cost-based planning, replication, failover tradeoffs, and ClickHouse’s columnar architecture.
- Working knowledge of distributed systems, including consensus, distributed transactions, and consistency models.
- Experience with Python or Go, plus enough Java to debug line-of-business code.
- Experience with Linux, infrastructure-as-code, AWS, and monitoring systems; willingness to join an on-call rota.
- Clear technical communication skills for explaining complex issues to engineers and product managers.
- Evidence of shipping database-operations, migration-safety, or incident-response tooling; investigating incidents end-to-end; moving workloads between engines or major versions; and changing how other teams build or ship.
- Experience with ClickHouse, CockroachDB, or another distributed database in production is valued, as are Kafka, Materialize, Snowflake, and AI coding-agent experience.
