Responsibilities
- Design SDK interfaces, document contracts, and support predictable third-party API integration.
- Build and maintain J2EE enterprise data-sharing pipelines for sensor-derived and human-reported intelligence.
- Develop and maintain Java desktop applications for consuming and presenting data.
- Write maintainable, testable code, participate in peer reviews, and enforce coding standards.
- Integrate ZeroMQ, REST, protobuf, and JSON communication protocols between sensors and command-and-control subsystems.
- Participate in Agile/Scrum activities including planning, refinement, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
- Develop and execute unit, integration, and system-level tests and support customer field trials and verification events.
- Identify, document, and resolve defects throughout the product lifecycle.
- Mentor junior team members and potentially lead a small technical workstream.
Requirements
- Technical bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or an equivalent related field.
- 5–8 years of professional software development experience, with most experience in Java, including Java 8+; Java 17 is preferred.
- Experience building desktop or embedded Java applications rather than exclusively web or microservices applications.
- Strong knowledge of Java 2EE/Jakarta EE fundamentals, including lifecycle management, dependency injection, concurrency, and JMS or equivalent messaging.
- Practical experience with MVVM or MVC in a Java desktop context, such as JavaFX or Swing.
- Spring Framework or Java MVC experience may be considered with demonstrated backend decomposition, layered architecture, and domain modelling expertise.
- Experience designing or consuming SDKs or integration APIs, including interface stability, versioning, and backward compatibility.
- Working knowledge of message bus patterns and at least one broker technology, such as ZeroMQ, ActiveMQ, or RabbitMQ.
- Experience with data serialization formats and communication protocols including protobuf, JSON, and REST.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments and meeting sprint commitments.
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills in multithreaded environments.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including writing design documents and presenting trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
- Eligibility to work in Canada and ability to obtain and maintain required Canadian government security clearance and other applicable security assessments.
- Preferred qualifications include familiarity with Interface Control Documents, AI/ML models, object-oriented integration or plugin architectures, defence/C2/real-time systems, and mentoring or technical workstream leadership.
