Responsibilities
- Design, build, and continuously improve observability platforms, pipelines, and tooling used by Canva engineers.
- Provide technical leadership, expertise, and input into impactful design decisions.
- Research and prototype improvements to metrics and continuous profiling platforms and their operational reliability.
- Improve metrics and profiling querying, visualization, monitoring, and developer user experiences.
- Champion observability best practices and guide other Canva engineers.
- Identify and advocate for cross-functional solutions involving metrics, profiling, and insights platforms.
- Participate in team ceremonies, knowledge sharing, and brainstorming sessions.
Requirements
- Proficiency coding in Python, Golang, and/or Java.
- Deep knowledge of computer engineering fundamentals and first principles.
- Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code, particularly Terraform and Jsonnet or equivalent tools.
- Practical experience with AWS services including EC2, EKS, Lambda, SQS, Kinesis, S3, and MSK, or equivalent.
- Experience with observability technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry.
- Experience with highly reliable, highly available, high-throughput distributed data pipeline systems and scalable databases.
- Deep OpenTelemetry experience is helpful, as is experience designing and operating large-scale metrics and monitoring infrastructure.
- Experience with distributed Prometheus clusters such as Thanos, Cortex, Mimir, or M3 is highly regarded.
- Experience with Kinesis, Kafka, Kubernetes stateful workloads, data security, data obfuscation, alerting, and SLA/SLO theory is helpful.
