Responsibilities
- Build and evolve shared platforms for event ingestion, milestone computation, webhook and notification delivery, scheduled work, and APIs.
- Design and operate reliable, low-latency, high-throughput event-driven and stream-processing systems.
- Own platform reliability, performance, scalability, development, operations, testing, and on-call support.
- Build systems in a multi-cloud environment using AWS and GCP, with potential use of Azure.
- Partner with modal engineering teams to expose reusable platform capabilities.
- Invest in monitoring, automation, and tools that improve the team’s on-call experience.
- Contribute to API design, versioning, backward compatibility, and shared platform consumption by other engineering teams.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional experience building large-scale, real-time or near-real-time cloud systems.
- Strong programming and debugging skills with proficiency in Java backend development.
- Experience designing and operating event-driven and stream-processing systems with Kafka or Kinesis.
- Experience creating scalable Java-based microservices.
- Experience working with databases, preferably PostgreSQL or other SQL-based databases.
- Experience building systems in a multi-cloud environment, especially AWS and GCP.
- Demonstrated ability to design for high event throughput, tight latency SLAs, and high availability.
- Experience investigating large and complex codebases and operating production systems at scale is helpful.
- Experience with REST APIs and OpenAPI/Swagger is a plus.
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, DynamoDB, MongoDB, or Postgres is helpful.
- An analytical approach to problem solving, ownership, resilience, and willingness to communicate ideas are valued.
