Base Salary
$200k - $325k/yr
Responsibilities
- Design and ship backend product improvements across APIs, services, data models, evaluations, rollouts, and production instrumentation.
- Own a backend area related to agent self-improvement, trust, or guardrails from ambiguous customer problem through measurable production outcomes.
- Build and operate distributed or asynchronous systems using databases, queues, workflows, and event-driven patterns.
- Run the complete improvement loop including authoring, evaluation, deployment, observation, iteration, reliability, and developer experience improvements.
- Contribute to product decisions, collaborate across functions, and remain hands-on with customer-facing backend systems.
- Use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully while applying strong engineering judgment to quality and outcomes.
- Develop a working understanding of Vapi’s LLM, speech-to-text, text-to-speech, telephony, and product-service integrations.
Requirements
- Track record operating at senior or staff scope while independently owning customer-facing backend product areas through production outcomes.
- Strong hands-on experience with TypeScript/Node.js, Go, or a comparable backend stack, including API, service, and data-model design.
- Experience building distributed or asynchronous systems with databases, queues, workflows, or event-driven patterns and reasoning about failure modes.
- Strong product judgment, customer focus, self-direction, communication, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Experience with testing, observability, reliability, incident response, safe rollouts, and production ownership.
- Regular, thoughtful use of AI-assisted development tools paired with sound engineering judgment.
- Preferred experience with Postgres and high-volume event-driven systems using BullMQ, Kafka, or Temporal.
- Preferred experience with real-time systems, voice or telephony, LLM-powered products, AI agents, AWS, Kubernetes/EKS, developer platforms, public APIs, SDKs, or technical dashboards.
- Experience at a fast-growing startup, building a zero-to-one product, founding a company, contributing to open source, or publishing technical work is a plus.
