Base Salary
$170k - $190k/yr
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and architecture of complex systems and projects within the Datastore.
- Design and scale PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, GraphQL APIs, integrations, and services.
- Own pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots into the warehouse and design event-driven systems covering producers, consumers, replay, and idempotency.
- Partner with product managers, scientific and clinical stakeholders, development teams, and support teams to translate requirements into platform solutions.
- Debug and profile ambiguous cross-system problems while improving structure, test coverage, tooling, documentation, and dashboards.
- Draft RFCs, lead technical design and discovery, make implementation trade-offs, and contribute to team planning.
- Mentor engineers, provide actionable feedback, teach database and engineering practices, and potentially serve as a technical lead.
- For the PostgreSQL-focused profile, operate PostgreSQL in production and lead schema evolution, performance tuning, access controls, migrations, replication, backup, and restore practices.
Requirements
- 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.
- Deep proficiency in at least one of data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
- Strong production SQL and PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexes, query plans, query tuning, and complex SQL queries.
- Hands-on data streaming and event-processing experience with Kafka or an equivalent such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis.
- Proficiency in Julia or Python; Julia experience is strongly preferred but not required.
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments, with familiarity with Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Helm.
- Experience mentoring engineers and improving team practices, tooling, test coverage, or documentation.
- For the Datastore Systems profile, experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript with Node.js and end-to-end event-driven pipeline design.
- For the PostgreSQL and Data Modeling profile, deep PostgreSQL knowledge including query planning, EXPLAIN (ANALYZE), schema design, zero-downtime migrations, replication, backup and restore, connection pooling, bloat, vacuum behavior, and extensions.
- Experience or interest in using LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production, with sound judgment about guardrails.
- Strong collaboration, communication, self-direction, and ability to work effectively in asynchronous, hybrid, or fully remote teams.
