Base Salary
$146k - $191k/yr
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and support stable, performant R&D software used by scientists.
- Own the software development lifecycle for R&D codebases, including bug triage, regression fixes, and long-term code health.
- Improve logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, observability, and diagnosis across the R&D software stack.
- Design, implement, and manage backend and frontend systems for R&D data acquisition.
- Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines for quality and reliable deployments.
- Build systems for automated calibration and bring-up of laboratory equipment.
- Review scientist-contributed code and provide guidance on architecture, cleanliness, and best practices.
- Coordinate with other IonQ software teams on system alignment and integration.
- Identify opportunities to improve R&D software accessibility, scalability, and self-service.
- Mentor engineers and scientist contributors and lead cross-cutting stability or contributor-experience initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience.
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience on complex, cross-functional systems.
- Strong Python proficiency and ability to debug across the stack, reason about concurrency and asynchronous systems, work with networking protocols, and perform performance profiling.
- Experience owning the full SDLC for production software, including debugging, incident response, and ongoing maintenance.
- Experience designing, building, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience writing user-facing documentation such as tutorials, API reference guides, and internal knowledge-base articles.
- Preferred: 8+ years of professional software experience, ideally in a scientific or R&D environment supporting research teams.
- Preferred: experience with hardware control, automation, or data acquisition.
- Preferred: experience mentoring and providing technical leadership to engineers.
- Preferred: experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, and modern DevOps practices.
- Preferred: experience with database design and management.
