Responsibilities

  • Own the overall architecture of observability platforms across ingestion, processing, storage, and query layers.
  • Define architectural patterns for high-throughput telemetry ingestion, real-time processing, distributed systems, multi-tenancy, and query-at-scale.
  • Establish architecture standards, reference architectures, design principles, and technical guidance across teams.
  • Identify and mitigate architectural risks related to scalability, reliability, performance, resilience, cost, and non-functional requirements.
  • Perform code reviews and develop or guide proof-of-concepts and reference implementations for critical components.
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Architects, Software Engineering Managers, and senior engineers on roadmaps, delivery plans, release readiness, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Guide the evolution from infrastructure monitoring to a full observability platform including application performance monitoring.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience in system architecture, distributed systems, and large-scale cloud-based platforms.
  • Strong experience designing microservice-based and event-driven architectures with complex scalability, reliability, performance, and cost trade-offs.
  • Strong backend experience with Java and Spring Boot-based microservices.
  • Working knowledge of Python and/or Go for scripting, automation, and collectors.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure monitoring, metrics, logs, distributed tracing, application performance monitoring, telemetry collection models, and observability platforms.
  • Experience with metric storage, time-series databases, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, NoSQL or in-memory stores such as Redis, and search or analytics engines.
  • Experience with OpenTelemetry, exporters, custom collectors, Kafka-class messaging systems, and event-driven telemetry ingestion pipelines.
  • Strong hands-on exposure to Docker and Kubernetes, plus Terraform, Ansible, and CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab CI.
  • Familiarity with Grafana, Kibana, OpenStack, MAAS, Juju, Canonical Observability Stack, and monitoring protocols such as SNMP and Prometheus-style systems.
  • Ability to reason about throughput, backpressure, reliability, data modeling, query patterns, data lifecycle management, and performance-critical backend code.
  • Strong collaboration, technical communication, mentoring, and architectural leadership capabilities.
  • Desirable experience includes ClickHouse, Neo4j, AWS, Azure, GCP, Vault, cert-manager, secure ingestion, RBAC, tenant isolation, Telecom OSS, NRPE, Filebeat, and Telegraf.

Benefits

  • The posting describes BT Group's purpose, culture, and opportunity to influence technology and strategy at a major UK communications company.
